PAHs substances covered by entry 50 of Annex XVII to REACH (i.e. benzo(a)pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, benzo[e]pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[j]fluoranthene and benzo[k]fluoranthene) are all classified as Carc. 1b (harmonised classification). The concentration limit for these substances in mixtures (such as rubber granules and mulches) is established in restriction entry 28 of Annex XVII to REACH which sets maximum concentration limits for use of Carc. 1A and Carc. 1B substances in mixtures for the general public. According to entry 28, individual concentration limits for PAHs listed in entry 50 are 0.01 % by weight (100 mg/kg) for benzo(a)pyrene and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and 0.1 % by weight (1000 mg/kg) for benzo[e]pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene,benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[j]fluoranthene and benzo[k]fluoranthene. Based on their specific limits and applying the CLP additivity rule, a limit of approximately 387 mg/kg is derived for the sum of REACH-8 PAHs. This value finds confirmation in recital (3) of Commission Regulation 2021/1199 of 21/07/2021 amending entry 50 of Annex XVII to REACH.
